Find your Tartan. Own your colours.
Welcome to the DATTs Tartan Search – the easy way to discover the tartan linked to your surname, clan, or family heritage. Whether you’re planning a wedding, ordering made‑to‑measure Highlandwear, or just flying your colours with a postmodern twist, this is where your journey starts.
Type your surname, hit search, and discover the tartans linked to your clan or family.
From ancient Highland heritage to bold modern designs, choose the one that fits your story and your style.
How It Works
- Type your surname in the search box: Tip: try “Mac” instead of “Mc”, and explore common spelling variants..
- Select from the results: Many surnames link to more than one tartan (including Modern, Ancient, Muted, Weathered variants).
- Browse the designs: You’ll see which clan tartans are currently in weave (available to order) and which are discontinued (archival or custom-weave only).
Your results will show tartans traditionally linked to your surname through Scottish clans and septs – those extended kin groups that, over centuries, adopted distinctive setts (patterns) and colours.
Clan, Sept, and Surname Connections
- Clans are large kinship groups with their own chiefs, historical territories, and recognised tartans.
- Septs are families historically allied to a clan, often adopting its tartan.
- A surname can belong to more than one clan or have multiple tartan designs over time.
- Traditionally, you inherit clan affiliation through your father’s line. But in today’s world (and certainly at DATTs) you can choose the tartan that speaks to you, no matter which branch of the family, or whose family tree it comes from.
- Wear your tartan – whether you are born into it, married it, or chose it – with respect and pride.
